This is an early report that documents the inception and evolution of community-based HIV prevention research in Canada. This report provides a history of CBR research in Canada, defines the term community and describes the role of community in HIV prevention research. It examines different types and forms of research, and explores some traditions of community involvement in research, particularly action research, participatory research and participatory action research. Additionally, this report investigates a community-based approach to research methodology and community participation including advocacy, partnerships, research roles, knowledge creation, dissemination, barriers, limitations, benefits and advantages. Finally, the report presents a model for decision-making and a planning guide for community-based HIV prevention research.
